Dr. Martin’s research focuses on the synthesis and
characterization of metastable inorganic structure—
compounds that are typically unstable under conventional
synthesis conditions. His group employs a variety of techniques
to kinetically trap these structures, including ion exchange,
electrochemical modification, solvothermal reactions, and,
most recently, laser heating. The goal of this work is to develop
materials with enhanced functional properties. For example,
catalytic activity can be improved by stabilizing catalysts in
defect-rich states, generating new active sites in regions that
would otherwise be inactive.
Dr. Martin’s research interests span fundamental and applied
aspects of materials chemistry, with a record of collaborative
grant-funded projects supporting state-of-the-art facility
acquisition and innovative materials research.
