Hi, my name is Lisette Perazzo. I was born and raised in Houston, TX, but moved to Austin in 2022. I just finished 10 years of being a teacher! Last year I participated in the RET program, which I found to be extremely exciting so I am very glad I am able to participate again this year.
I learned so much from working in the chemistry lab last year and was able to apply that to a lesson with my first graders. They absolutely loved learning about the extraction and manipulation of anthocyanins/dye from avocados. We actually ended up using that knowledge to perform additional experiments during several units throughout the school year. At the end of the year when we were writing down our favorite memories of first grade, I actually had several kiddos say they remember how fun it was to experiment with avocados. We also had a saying throughout the school year about solving problems using our “engineering brain.” It helped my students become extremely independent. I’m sure that whatever lesson I create during this RET summer will be just as fun for my new class!
